Birch Wood Grain Wedding Cake
I think this may be the most photogenic cake I have ever made. Usually I take picture after picture, and struggle to find one I truly like. But this cake, it seemed like almost every snap I took was a real keeper.
I really enjoyed making this cake. I took inspiration from 3 different wood type cakes that the couple brought in to make this cake. The wood is supposed to resemble a birch tree. I used Fondarific to wrap each tier, leaving a little excess over the top of the cake. The Fondarific worked well because I could blend it together nicely in the back. There was still a visible seam, but it blended together WAY better than regular fondant.
From there I hand painted the birch stripes, some knot holes, and the carved heart with the bride and groom's initials. I then painted several various varieties of gumpaste flowers in various shades of peach and cascaded them down the front of the cake from tier to tier. I added a little gumpaste greenery; I thought it added a lot to the nature theme and I thought it really made those peach flowers pop!
This wedding was held in Dalton GA, the groom's family have been long time customers of mine. I was proud to make it for them and had a great time doing it!!
So now that you've seen the 3 different photos I took, which one is your favorite? Top (grassy background), Middle (bright sunny background), or Bottom (burlap "studio" background)? Let me know in the comments, and pop back here on Friday and I'll feature another awesome cake AND a mini tutorial!!
Gorgeous cake design! You are right - not sure which photo I like the most - each seems to show a different personality of the cake.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous cake!! I love the first one- the green is a nice contrast.
ReplyDeleteBurlap seems to contrast better with the cake. Too much back light distracts from the cake on the sunny, and the first one (grassy) the colors don't look "right". :)
ReplyDeleteThat is hard to choose! Each background highlights different things, but I think my favorite is the second one.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous cake! I honestly can't tell which picture I like most! I think I like the second one best
ReplyDeleteThose wedding cakes are really elegant and stunning. I so like it! The designs are really eye catching. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThe first picture is my favorite. The cake is very elegant, I love the design.
ReplyDeleteI love all the photos! It really is photogenic.
ReplyDeleteI like the first one. :) The cake really looks at home in the beautiful vibrant green of nature! I really really love this cake. It is so cute! And I love how different it is than other wedding cakes... Great job!
ReplyDeleteThanks Allison, i think cakes always "pop" against a green grass background! And I always get excited when I get a couple looking for a non-traditional wedding cake!

ReplyDeleteIts beautiful!! Could you post a pic of the knot holes.....im curious what it looks like. Great job!!
ReplyDeleteHi Anon! I think there was only 1 or 2 knot holes on the cake ( birch is not a knotty wood). Unfortunately I don't have a picture with the knot holes, but it's not rocket surgery! Just make a small swirl. Hope this helps! :)
DeleteHi, im trying to make a similar cake to this one and really haveno experience with wedding cakes. I want to do just the top three layers and would like to a blue and green gum paste arrangement. Do you have any suggestions for some more wild flowers blue/green arrangements? Any suggestions would be great! Thanks!!
ReplyDelete@Anon, usually the client will dictate the type of flowers. If the client has no clue, maybe they (or even you) could consult a florist? I'm no botanist, but the only blue/green flowers I can think of off-hand would maybe be a hydrangea. Good luck!
DeleteHands down....grassy background! Beautiful!
