XBOX 360 Groom's Cake
This isn't the first XBOX 360 groom's cake I have done, and I was pretty happy with it, except for those darn air vents on top. I have always struggled with the best way to reproduce this "vented" look on a cake I am trying to recreate. Using small fondant circles doesn't look right because they are raised of the cake. Even the big circular cupcake sprinkles don't look right and they are very thin! On this attempt I used a small cutter to cut through the fondant and then fill in each hole with black icing. Yes. it was time consuming and I can't believe it looks as good as it did. I have to do another XBOX cake before the end of the year and I am brainstorming my options now.
So... have any of you decorators out there made a cake with these type of vent holes before? If so, what worked best for you? Let me know in the comments section!!
Have a great weekend!
How about the 'two layers of fondant method' (for lack of a better term) where you start with a layer of black fondant underneath. Then once you put the layer of white on top, use a small round cutter (i.e. the #7 tip) to gently cut small circles of white off. Then lift the small circles off, revealing the black underneath? I know it would be pretty time consuming and not sure how it would work with tiny circles, but I've done it with making windows :)
ReplyDeleteOh wow!! It looks great, I would've never thought to do what you did to get the vented look!! Great Job!

My idea was the same as Bev's... unfortunately I agree with her that this would be super time consuming... I love the look of what you did this time. If you are going to spend the time, might as well go with a method you already know will work! Happy caking!
ReplyDeleteI think I would make a quick dot pattern with a stencil or embossing sheet, then press onto the dots on the soft fondant with something like a pencil eraser, then pipe a dot of icing in each hole or stick a piece of flat fondant in there and press down so they look recessed. It's a tough one, but your cake looks great.
